5 Things Your Website Should Be Doing for Your Business (Besides Looking Pretty)

I love a pretty website. Obviously. 😂

The colors, the fonts, the photos, the little details that make everything feel polished and you—all of that matters.

But here's the thing:

Your website has a job to do.

It shouldn't just sit there looking cute.

A good website should help people understand what you do, find what they're looking for, trust your business and ultimately take that next step—whether that's filling out your contact form, scheduling an appointment, buying something or reaching out for more information.

So, if your website looks great but isn't actually helping your business...we have a problem. 😉

Here are five things your website should be doing for you.

1. It Should Make It VERY Clear What You Do

When someone lands on your website, they shouldn't have to investigate.

They shouldn't need to click through three pages, scroll halfway down your homepage or decode a clever tagline to figure out what you actually do.

Within the first few seconds, they should understand:

What do you offer? Who do you help? And why should they keep reading?

Simple doesn't mean boring. You can absolutely have personality in your website copy—I encourage it! But clarity always wins.

Think of your homepage like meeting someone for the first time.

You wouldn't introduce yourself by saying:

"Creating meaningful experiences that inspire possibilities."

Okay...but what do you DO? 😂

Your website shouldn't leave people wondering either.

2. It Should Tell People What to Do Next

You've gotten someone to your website. Yay!

Now what?

One of the biggest mistakes I see on websites is making visitors figure out their own next step.

Every page should have some kind of direction.

Maybe it's:

  • Schedule a Consultation

  • View My Services

  • Request a Quote

  • Shop Now

  • Learn More

  • Contact Me

Whatever makes sense for your business, give people somewhere to go.

And don't be afraid to use calls-to-action more than once. Someone might be ready to contact you immediately. Someone else might need to scroll through your entire page first.

Make it easy for both of them.

3. It Should Make People Trust You

Before someone hires you, books with you or buys from you, they're probably doing a little investigating.

And yes...they're judging your website. 😂

Your website is often one of the first impressions someone gets of your business, and it should make them feel like they've come to the right place.

That doesn't mean everything needs to be super fancy.

Trust can come from things as simple as:

  • Real photos of you, your team or your work

  • Client testimonials

  • Clear information about your services

  • Consistent branding

  • An About page that actually sounds like a human wrote it

  • Easy-to-find contact information

  • Helpful FAQs

All of those little things add up.

Your website should make someone think, "Yep. These are my people."

4. It Should Help People Find You on Google

You can have the most beautiful website on the internet...

But if nobody can find it, that's not helping you much.

This is where SEO comes in.

And no, SEO isn't just stuffing the same keyword into your website 47 times and hoping Google likes you. 😂

Good SEO starts with a website that's organized well and clearly communicates what your business does.

That includes things like page titles, headings, page descriptions, image alt text, useful content, internal links and making sure each page has a clear purpose.

Your website should be designed for actual humans first—but we also want to make it easy for Google to understand what your business is all about.

Because the easier it is for search engines to understand your website, the better chance you have of showing up when the right person is searching for exactly what you offer.

5. It Should Work for You Even When You're Not Working

This might be my favorite one.

Your website doesn't take weekends off.

It doesn't go on vacation.

It doesn't say, "I'll answer that email Monday morning." 😂

It's working for your business 24/7.

A good website can answer common questions, explain your services, show off your work, share testimonials, introduce people to your business and collect inquiries—all while you're doing literally anything else.

That's why I don't think of a website as simply another piece of marketing.

It's part of your business.

And when it's set up well, it can save you time while helping potential clients feel much more confident about reaching out.

So...Is Your Website Doing Its Job?

Your website doesn't just need to look good.

It should actually be doing something for your business.

If yours is feeling more like an online brochure than a tool that's helping people find you, understand what you offer and take the next step, it might be time for a refresh.

And yes...we can still make it really pretty too. 😉
